In a significant stride towards social justice, the Queen Entrepreneur Women’s Foundation has partnered with Nigeria Legal Aid to provide pro bono legal services for incarcerated women and young girls who have been victims of domestic violence, rape, or have found themselves in unfortunate circumstances due to self-defense. This collaboration aims to ensure that these vulnerable individuals, often without access to legal representation, receive the support and justice they deserve.
A Landmark Success
The partnership recently celebrated a milestone with its first successful case. A 16-year-old girl, wrongly accused of stealing a phone based on her appearance alone, had been languishing in detention for months without legal representation. The Queen Entrepreneur Women’s Foundation, under the leadership of Keran Danjan, Tessy Egonu, and lead counsel Mercy Olamide, took up her case. Their diligent efforts resulted in the charges being struck out, and the young girl was joyfully reunited with her family.
The Importance of Legal Representation
This case highlights the critical need for accessible legal representation. Many women and young girls in Nigeria are unjustly incarcerated due to systemic failures and lack of legal resources.
